Gophers and Groundhogs
The smaller gopher and the larger groundhog are burrowing members of the numerous, successful order of rodents. Both are known for their extensive underground tunnels, which may support thousands of sociable gophers and far less of the more solitary groundhog. Typical contributors seek answers to gopher and groundhog defensive behaviors, environmental roles in opening up air passageways underground and sharing underground 手机500彩票客户端s with other wildlife, geographic ranges, representations in popular culture, survival threats, and troubled interactions with people.
Did they use a badger or a hedgehog instead of a groundhog on Groundhog's Day in Europe?
Europeans do not have an equivalent of Groundhog Day. In Canada and the US, Ground Hog Day is a silly annual festival, held in late winter, to 'predict" how soon Spring will come to the area, Groundhog Day in the US (as seen in the Bill Murray film) is 2nd February. Early in the morning, of the " Day ", a tame Ground Hog, is observed, to see if there is enough daylight for him " to see his shadow ". The result means either 6 more weeks of winter weather, or a earlier than normal spring thaw of the lakes and rivers, which are frozen in winter in Canada. A number of towns hold such a "Ground Hog Festival" as a tourist boost for the town. Some attract huge crowds, as much as 25,000 people to a town with a normal population of 5,000. The Day is allways held on a week end to get maximum attendance, and TV stations all ways send a camera crew to do a "live remote shoot". It is all in fun, and nobody takes it seriously at all. Pre-Christian Celts observed solar cycles halfway between each solstice and equinox; these are called Quarter Days. On Quarter Days, the "veil" between this world and the Otherworld or spirit world is thinnest. This is the best time to see into the future, with the aid of the spirits. On Samhuin (now Halloween) one dresses as a ghoul so that spirits intent on mischief would mistake you手机500彩票客户端 for one of their own and pass by. Groundhog day corresponds to Imbolc, therefore it has the prognostication aspect. Hedgehogs are "used" in Britain. Don't pick one up - they're loaded with fleas. The underlying principle behind Groundhog Day in North America was almost certainly brought over by settlers from western Europe. Both in England and Scotland there are old weather sayings about the same date (2 February) which is celebrated in many Christian traditions as the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the popular name for which is Candlemas. All these sayings are similar; one example is: "If Candlemas Day be fair and bright Winter will have another fight; But if Candlemas Day brings clouds and rain, Winter's gone and won't come again." The principle behind the rhyme is this: in NW Europe (including the British Isles), sunny weather in early February is normally associated with anticyclonic weather, which often persists for long periods and brings long periods of cold, frosty weather. Cloudy, rainy weather is usually associated with depressions coming in from the Atlantic and the weather is consequently less cold, snow and frost appearing only briefly, if at all. The important thing is that by early February the weather is normally set in a pattern in that one or other of the above types tends to persist, usually for several weeks.

Did the groundhog see its shadow yesterday?
What happened to Chuck Knoblauch?
Being a Minnesota Twins fan, I have often wondered the same thing. As far as I can tell he is out of pro baseball altogether. You have to wonder if he has turned down minor league deals because I'd think someone would give the guy another shot. I suppose he has a big pile of cash to sit on at 手机500彩票客户端. He was a great player with the Twins but the best contribution he made after 1991 was demanding a trade. We shipped the complainer off to the Yankees and got some great players in return (Guzman, Milton, and Buchanan). Soon after he became fixated on throwing the ball into the box seats on the first baseline whenever a routine grounder was hit to him. He's in his second year of retirement, after refusing a minor league assignment in 2003. What happen if you手机500彩票客户端r dog killed a groundhog?
What does it mean if the Groundhog sees his shadow on February 2nd?
Tradition holds that if the groundhog sees his shadow, we'll have six more weeks of winter. If he does not, we will have an early spring (in about a month and a half). The answer above says that it will be a month and a half i he doesnt see his shadow, or six weeks if he does. Six weeks and a month and a half are the same amount of tie.

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck meaning?
There really is no true meaning. It is a tongue twister. In otherwords people try to say it fast and see if it comes out as something different or if they mess up. Sometimes they challenge others with this question,"How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood." It may confuse others in a laughable manner. Kids have fun seeing who can say it and who can't. In conclusion, this expression doesn't have a real meaning and its just said for fun. A woodchuck can chuck wood though. And people really do try to answer this question with estimates. So you手机500彩票客户端r answer, its a tongue twister.
What is the difference between a gopher and groundhog?
Groundhogs are larger than gophers and have stronger forepaws and bodies. They're avid swimmers; gophers aren't exactly water-bound and sometimes drowning and flooding their tunnels is used as a means of exterminating them, unfortunately and very inhumanely. Groundhogs measure about fifteen to twenty-five inches in length and weigh between four and nine pounds, but can, if they live long enough, grow to be as heavy as thirty pounds. Gophers (pocket gophers, the "true" gophers, called this because of the food-storage pouches in their cheeks) are smaller and measure anywhere from four to twelve inches in length, and weigh as little as three centigrams (three-hundred grams or so) or as much as two pounds and change (about a kilogram). Groundhogs hibernate; gophers don't. Groundhogs swim; gophers don't (at least not very well). Groundhogs breed in their second year, having only one litter per year; gophers breed in their first year and can have two litters per year. Both give birth to relatively blind and helpless you手机500彩票客户端ng. Do not attempt to make pets of either of these animals unless you手机500彩票客户端 are an experienced handler of wildlife or have done PLENTY of research! They can be very sweet pets, but the last thing you手机500彩票客户端 want to do is kill one in captivity because of you手机500彩票客户端r own negligence or innocent ignorance. Groundhogs are more aggressive than gophers; gophers are quite docile and more easily tamed; either can be raised in captivity in the proper environment and with proper feeding. Even groundhogs can be tamed, but their aggressive nature can be problematic and you手机500彩票客户端 have to work hard with them to make them sweet and cuddly. The groundhog has a national holiday named after it; sadly, the sweet little gopher doesn't. (Gophers are very beneficial in gardens and eat weeds in addition to our prized roots and bulbs; given the chance, they can do more good than harm, but if you手机500彩票客户端 plant only desired items and eliminate all weeds, gophers have nothing to eat but what you手机500彩票客户端 give them, which makes them you手机500彩票客户端r competitor rather than you手机500彩票客户端r helper. They like dandelions and most tubers and bulbs.) Groundhogs don't have many natural predators due to their size; gophers have quite a long list of natural predators: cats, dogs, coyotes, snakes, raptors (owls, hawks, etc.,) weasels, badgers, and skunks. Groundhogs stand upright outside their burrows and warn one another of danger. It's common to see them foraging or alert outside their 手机500彩票客户端s. Gophers are not as bold. The groundhog, also known as the woodchuck (or land-beaver, or whistlepig) is a large rodent belonging to the same marmot family as ground squirrels. Groundhogs are lowland (rather than mountainous) creatures, common in North America and in the northeast- and central-US. They're also found in Alaska, with their habitat extending into southeast to Alabama. They can live up to six years in the wild, but one kept as a pet lived to be twenty-two years old (according to an article at www.wikipedia.org). Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodchuck Gophers are burrowing rodents in the Geomyidae family. Several kinds of ground squirrels of the Sciuridae family are called gophers but are not "true" gophers. There are so many different kinds of gophers, it's best if you手机500彩票客户端 read up on them here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocket_gopher.
